Student Spotlight

Morganton Day School students are balanced. This includes balancing academics, social events, and extracurricular activities. As part of personal wellness, many students choose to participate in athletics. Many lower school students have participated in recreation sports and in middle school, the Morganton Day School Titans have been fortunate to participate in an independent school athletic league. Students are finding their passion through these opportunities, while others join for the fun and camaraderie.

Recently, three MDS alumni and two current students have earned the honor of competing at the state level! Katie Deacon claimed a gold medal in the Women's 1000 Meter Run at the 3A Indoor Track State Championships in Winston-Salem. Katie won the girl’s 1000-meter run with a time of 3:04:24, becoming Freedom High School's 2nd-ever female state champion in track. She has signed with Davidson College for both cross-country and track and will begin her college experience in the fall.

Brandon Sexton and Anna Cape, both freshmen at Draughn High School, also competed in state finals last weekend. Brandon competed in the 200-yard freestyle relay for swimming, spending several days in Cary at the state competition. Brandon's trio placed 14th out of a total of 60 schools. Earlier in the season, Brandon competed in regionals representing his school in the 200-yard freestyle relay, medley relay, and 50m freestyle individual event.

Anna began running cross country in the fall and enjoyed the sport so much that she worked with the coach and athletic director at Draughn High School to form a winter indoor track team. Putting the learner profile into action, Anna took a risk and tried the new skill of pole vaulting. Her hard work paid off as she placed 7th in the state at last weekend's state Division 1A/2A indoor track meet in Winston-Salem.

Here at MDS, Miles and Lucy Lynam are preparing for the NC State Championships for 14&under, short-course swimming to be held in Charlotte. Miles will compete in the 100 fly, 50 fly, 500 freestyle, and 50-meter backstroke. Lucy will compete in the 50-free and 100-meter freestyle events. The two swimmers will have a busy weekend! We wish them luck as their commitment and perseverance will be implemented to achieve their individual goals.

We are so proud of our athletes and how they balance hard work and play. They enter tasks enthusiastically, and each of these outstanding students can be found supporting teammates even as they strive for their personal best. Go, Titans!
