Young Authors!

Stories make us who we are and at MDS, every story matters! Our students know they have a voice and that each story is worth celebrating.

Student agency is at the heart of an International Baccalaureate® curriculum, which includes voice, choice, and ownership, with lessons of tolerance, empathy, and open-mindedness. Children learn to share perspectives, acknowledge similarities and differences, and find ways to respectfully communicate their values, passions, and ideas, all while developing their individual voices.

Another significant part of our curriculum includes how we express ourselves through art and language. To help bring this to life for our students, each year, we participate in the North Carolina Reading Association's Young Author competition. This is an opportunity to integrate lessons in grammar, vocabulary, writing mechanics, organization, and style in a real-world application. Writing for a purpose, students share their voices with a larger audience. New this year, the competition includes an art component, allowing students to visually express their thoughts and ideas. We are pleased to share that 42 of our students' work won at the Blue Ridge Reading Council level and are now advancing to the state level, where judges across the state will assess their work!
