Inside the Classroom (JK)
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” It’s an age-old question, in Jr Kindergarten we like to switch it up and ask “How will you help your community when you grow up?”
During our transdisciplinary unit “How we organize ourselves” JK students learn about what communities are and about members of our community that help it function. From doctors to trash collectors, students in JK4 dive into the importance of each community helper, the tools used at each job, and how they work together within our community.
In this year's summative assessment, JK4 students chose one community helper they learned about and created posters detailing their jobs. We celebrated their hard work by having a community helper day where students dressed as their chosen community helpers and presented their posters to their classmates.
For lunch, both JK classes came together and worked as chefs creating pizzas with toppings of their choice. It’s a day full of risk-taking, learning, creativity, and the perfect ending to a great unit!
