MDS Acquires Armory, Plans Expansion
Morganton, NC, November 25, 2019 – Morganton Day School announces their purchase of the Old Armory in downtown Morganton and plans for renovation and expansion into the historic building. MDS students, staff, trustees, and city officials held a ribbon cutting with the Burke County Chamber of Commerce to commemorate the occasion on Thursday, November 21.
MDS has used the Armory for STEAM and special events for years, and now the local landmark will officially become part of the school. The Board of Trustees announced plans to upgrade the gymnasium for expansion of the athletic program, and to create innovative Middle School classrooms.
“I am energized and excited by Morganton Day School's acquisition of the Armory building,” said Aaron Joyner, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. “This investment in the future of the school is central to our plan to reshape our campus, transform our Middle School, and create a more vibrant environment for our enrichment classes. This wonderful opportunity for expansion lays the groundwork for immediate improvements, and room for the school to grow for generations to come.”
“The Armory will continue to be an important historical part of Burke County,” said Dr. Melanie Mikusa, Head of School. “This purchase further affirms our school’s commitment to this community.”
“Renovating the armory will create a better learning environment for our students, allow us to expand our PE curriculum, and provide a place for our sports teams to practice,” said MDS physical education teacher, Erica Baxter.
Mayor Ronnie Thompson spoke to the group and praised MDS as “a school that emphasizes innovation.” Johnnie Carswell, chairman of the county commissioners, said to Dr. Mikusa, “We’re appreciative of what you and your staff do. These students will look back and be glad that they could be a part of this historic occasion and new chapter in your school’s history.”
The Armory renovation will coincide with a Capital Campaign beginning in 2020. Plans, progression, and status updates will be posted on the school’s official website: www.morgantondayschool.com.
MDS, originally called The Children’s School, was founded in the fall of 1978 with four families and educational philosophies from around the world. Forty-one years later, Morganton Day School is thriving with over 120 students and an accredited I.B. curriculum. In addition to an outstanding Primary Years Programme, MDS proudly offers a 5-star Junior Kindergarten program and a rigorous Middle School focused on STEAM and experiential learning.
Dr. Mikusa said, “I look forward to our school continuing to serve the children of Burke and surrounding counties for many years to come.”
