Making a Difference Through Service
Service learning and engaging with the community are key components in the IB curriculum framework. Students strive to find ways they can take action and make our world a better place. They learn the importance of organizations that unite citizens within a community and seek opportunities to be change-makers. This is accomplished authentically when students make connections with their learning, however, we also cherish the chance to go out in force as one school body. This is the spirit of Making a Difference through Service Day.
This year students made mittens and filled bags with hot hands and feet warmers for those without warm shelter. Students showed appreciation to our library and public safety officers by creating cards and decorating cookies for special treats. They collected toys as donations for BUCM and worked to beautify The Meeting Place Mission. Third graders donated Thanksgiving Dinner for those residing at Options and organized diaper donations for the infants. And middle school students learned about the role of the Industrial Commons in our community. Then the students helped to sort socks that can be made into yarn for new socks and clothing.
During this holiday season, let's continue to find ways we can make a difference within our community and in the lives of those around us. Our students are caring, empathetic, creative problem-solvers, communicators, and open-minded, and we are so proud of the wonderful citizens they are becoming!
