Middle School Personal Projects
Each year, the 8th-grade students select a year-long personal project focused on personal challenges and goal setting. This could be voluntary public service, setting and achieving a goal for personal growth, or developing an aspect of physical fitness. The process allows students to become more involved in a topic they already enjoy or to try something for the first time.
Throughout the year, 8th graders are given the opportunity to exhibit responsibility and demonstrate personal commitment and perseverance, organizational and time-management skills, and thoughtful reflection through their personal projects. They think of ways they can connect their learning within a greater global context and deepen their understandings based on concepts associated with their project.
Ella became interested in volleyball when she joined the Morganton Day School team in the fall of 2022. She enjoyed the sport and wanted to continue to master her abilities even after the season ended, so for her 8th-grade personal project, she decided to develop her volleyball skills further. Many hours were spent working with Coach B in addition to her team practices and she even joined a travel volleyball team! Ella is now offering a volleyball club for students in fourth through eighth grades.
For the research component of her personal project, Ella has been learning more about Title IX. She has been digging into her research by gaining a better understanding of this legislation and discovering the stories of individuals who influenced the beginnings of this policy and who have been affected since it was enacted. As part of her research, she is asking parents to complete a survey so she can gain a better idea of our school community's knowledge and experiences based on Title IX. Click below to access the survey. Thanks in advance for helping this outstanding student with her research!
