The Heart of an MDS IB Education

Every year, Special Studies Week brings excitement and this year is no different. After months of in-class preparation, MDS middle school students are spread across the globe on their expeditionary learning experiences.

Expeditionary Learning (EL) is at the heart of an MDS IB education. EL is an educational approach emphasizing hands-on, experiential learning while engaged in immersive expeditions. This year students are in the Outer Banks, Space Camp, Marine Lab, and Costa Rica. All of these learning expeditions have students actively engaging with the science content and well as the cultural component of any travel. This interdisciplinary learning, connects subject matter to real-world application, creating deeper learning and understanding.
