Gems of an IB Education
Transdisciplinary Themes of Global Learning
The IB programme provides a detailed and developmentally appropriate curriculum framework that is broad, balanced, conceptual, and connected.
Transdisciplinary Learning is one of the many reasons students thrive with an IB education. Transdisciplinary learning describes the holistic learning experience that allows students to engage with concepts and learn new skills across subject matters. Connections from Units of Inquiry are made between subject areas allowing students to deepen their understanding and take learning outside the classroom and into the world.
IB learning aims to transcend traditional boundaries between subject areas in the Primary Years Programme by encouraging students to explore the six transdisciplinary themes of global significance (See Graphic).
Each year, students focus on these six transdisciplinary themes through their Units of Inquiry. The importance of making connections and learning about the world in ways reaching beyond the scope of individual subjects is emphasized as each theme is explored. Students have authentic opportunities to connect their learning to the world around them. By exploring these globally significant themes each year, students develop depth in conceptual knowledge and better understand the interconnectedness of their world.
