MDS Celebrates S.T.E.A.M. with Science Night

Morganton, NC, Jan. 9, 2019 – Tuesday evening, students and parents reveled in the joy of science at Morganton Day School. The annual S.T.E.A.M. Night at MDS is an opportunity for younger students to explore a variety of integrated science topics, including physics, chemistry, and engineering. The special evening also gives parents a chance to experience the school’s inquiry-based, hands-on learning philosophy in action. This year, activities included making catapults, creating chemical reactions, and building structures.  

In addition to the engaging S.T.E.A.M. activities, middle school students presented their Future City project to parents in preparation for the upcoming competition at NC State. During the semester long course, students created a Sim City, researched aspects of city infrastructure, energy systems  as well as renewable, reliable energy sources. Additionally, students designed and built a city set 100 years in the future that could recover efficiently from a natural disaster. The students on the presentation team wrote a seven-minute creative sketch to demonstrate their knowledge. The regional Future City competition is Jan. 13, where students will present the model city to judges and answer questions about their design.
