Celebrating Eighth Grade Personal Projects
Eighth-grade students select a topic for personal exploration, inquiry, action, and reflection each year. Personal Projects allow students to become more involved in something they already enjoy or to try something for the first time. Students are asked to establish and work toward challenging yet achievable goals that demonstrate planning and taking initiative in one of these three areas:
Voluntary Community Service
Personal Development
Physical Fitness
Goals are identified and defined through a global context bringing significance and direction to their project. This project's research and action phases are based on conceptual understandings and highlight student connections within our school, community, and world. Students spend time throughout the year engaging with a mentor, working independently to accomplish a goal, and creating a website to demonstrate learning. Students journal and reflect throughout the process to present their learning, challenges, and successes later. They are given the opportunity to exhibit high levels of responsibility and to demonstrate personal commitment, perseverance, organizational and time-management skills, and communication skills. Students give a formal speech to present their work and set up a display table so they can informally talk with others about their project.
We are so proud of our 8th graders for their accomplishments. This year's personal projects include:
