Poetry Slam

Fourth Grade Poetry Unit

"Poetry is fun!" 4th graders heard Mrs. Cato-Chapman say
How We Express Ourselves we're learning today.

The teacher explained, "Poems create images in your mind
And feelings are evoked - some are sad and some are kind".

It sounds exciting, but is it for me?
Rhyming and Rhythm, how hard could it be?

I stared at the paper trying to hide my fright.
"Take a risk. Be courageous! There's no wrong or right."

So I picked up my pencil and ideas began to grow
And soon the words spilled on the page as my thoughts continued to flow.

Limerick, Free Verse, and Haiku
Students learned authentically what to do.

They read and wrote and celebrated poets old and poets new
Their knowledge and creativity became deeper - yes, it's true.

And after weeks of diving into their imagination
Adventure Bound Books was the poetry-sharing destination.

With friends, family, and teachers to cheer them on
They all took a turn to show what they had done.

Berets on their heads and ideas in their brains
Students knew there was nothing to lose and so much to gain.

With snaps and claps and a smile on each face
The day and the moment will never be replaced.

The students successfully accomplished this great endeavor
And poetry is in each 4th grader's heart forever.
