Lettuce root for MDS first graders!

Plants support life on our planet.

As the beautiful colors of fall surround us, first-grade students are investigating the importance of plants in our world. After learning the typical parts of a plant and the function of each part, students connected how plants make energy.

With magnifying glasses in hand, they ventured outside to go on a leaf walk.

  • "I can see the veins that carry the water!" Jojo exclaimed.

  • "The leaves are changing colors!" Owen observed.

  • "I think it's because it's getting colder and darker and they don't have as much sunlight", explained Nora.

Each experiential activity helps these inquirers make lots of connections to their central idea, "Plants support life on our planet."

With each unit, we hope our students will take action based on their learning. Actions benefit our school community!

As you walk around campus, you will see how the first graders have been hard at work planting flowers and cleaning up the raised beds.

With all of this great autumn learning, we can't wait to see what spring will bring!
