Third Grade: Money Matters

Morganton Day School third-graders are on the road to better financial understanding!

Central Idea: Financial knowledge strengthens individual decision-making.
Key Concepts: Function, Connection, Responsibility

As part of their entrepreneurship unit, they have journeyed through balancing income and expenses, maintaining a checking account, realizing how interest works and setting financial goals. Market Day is the culmination of the unit and allows students to be entrepreneurs for the day - creating and selling goods through their mock business.

“Market Day is one of my favorite culminating activities! For weeks students have learned concepts and vocabulary related to business, and this activity brings their learning to life!”

Making responsible decisions about money provides short and long-term benefits. Hands-on learning provided by this unit offers each student the opportunity to market their goods, adjust prices due to supply and demand, and more.

“It’s so exciting to watch students apply what they’ve learned throughout the unit,” added Mrs. Holt.

Our students have experienced roadblocks and adventure as they navigated their unit of inquiry. They gained advice from local entrepreneurs who served as their road map and their final destination. These eight and nine-year-olds became entrepreneurs themselves.

A huge thank you to the following businesses and entrepreneurs who spent time with our students:

📈 Beth Patton - Patton Properties

📈 Sabrina Hurt - TREAT

📈 Bryan Drake - Mountain Burrito

📈 Angela Shores - Adventure Bound Books

📈 Adam Mackay - West Union Art Studios

📈 First Horizon Bank
